Intent

Our intent is to provide an academic RE curriculum that is rigorous, engaging, enriching and inclusive. We hope that through the regular teaching of R.E. pupils feel empowered and enabled to hold balanced and informed conversations about the religious and world views that they have encountered.

We believe that it is important for all our pupils to learn about religion and world views and also to learn from them. We hope that in providing them with a rich a balanced curriculum, they can begin to understand the world around them. The aim of Religious Education in our school is:

• To help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain.
• To support pupils to understand how religious beliefs shape the everyday lives of their adherents
• To enhance the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all pupils.

To build a foundation upon which the children can make sense of the context within which they live and the wider context they will enter as they grow up. 

Implementation

Religious Education is taught as a discrete subject, following the Kapow scheme of work whilst adhering to the requirements of the locally agreed syllabus. Cross curricular links are made where relevant, to enhance learning. Class teachers are responsible for ensuring that appropriate time is used to deliver the scheme of work effectively. The school applies the recommended teaching time as per the locally agreed syllabus, which states all pupils in Key Stage One should receive 36 hours of Religious Education per year (approx 1 hour per week) and Key Stage Two pupils should recieve 45 hours per year (approx. 1.25 hours per week).

EYFS Curriculum

Pupils in EYFS learn about People and Communities and this forms a basis for future R.E learning. Pupils are taught about Christianity and are given opportunities to learn about any religions or beliefs that are represented within the class, school and local community.

Trips and Visits

RE gives particular opportunities to promote an ethos of respect for others, challenge stereotypes and build understanding of other cultures and beliefs. External contributors from the community, e.g. local clergy, local members/speakers from other religions, make a valuable contribution to the RE programme at Braybrook Primary Academy. When such speakers are invited in staff will always be present during the course of the session.  Efforts will be made to facilitate RE trips and visits, however when this is not possible, teachers will make use of virtual tours, photos and other online experiences in order to enhance the children’s learning.

Through their R.E. learning, the children are enabled:

• Develop an understanding of the major world religions and world views.
• Develop a religious vocabulary that enables them to discuss topics with clarity and confidence.
• Make links between different faiths and appreciate different views.
• Reflect on questions of meaning, offering their own thoughtful and informed insights into religious and secular world-views
